Yunus Mohammad - Senior Consultant, QMV

What do you do at QMV and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?

I am a senior consultant at QMV. I usually find myself working on platform development and migrations for various super funds. You can come to me if you need help establishing new processes or with a platform migration.

Currently, I am using my business analyst skills to develop a product offering knowledge management platform. This has the potential to feed into QMV’s Investigate and assist with data and configuration integrity. You can also come to me if want to talk about the different brewing methods for coffee.

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on/or have completed?

I have recently completed my RG146 training. It provides a solid foundation to support my experience in the superannuation industry. Years of experience can teach you a lot about the industry but there is always more to learn and RG146 helped bridge those gaps. This detailed knowledge of superannuation and the finance regulations in general, timed perfectly with my current engagement. It helped me to identify a number of data points to capture that may have slipped under the radar until it was too late to incorporate in the final product.

Who or What has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

In a previous role, there was a colleague I worked with who was passionate about getting things right. He would investigate an error and trace it through to the cause with all the focus of predator stalking its prey. He combined that with a deep understanding of superannuation and a great sense of humour to smooth out sticky situations. A very admirable person to work with and traits I aim to have in my professional career.

He, like all the colleagues I have worked with have had a huge impact on my work. They have shown me various approaches and the outcomes both good and bad. Through their experience and guidance, I have adopted and refined what works well for me. Every engagement teaches me new approaches through the people I meet.

While working in the UK I designed and established processes to handle a new form of delivery for a logistics company. This was the most challenging process design I have had to work on as it required close attention to timing and working with delivery drivers on their runs to see the how even the smallest of changes in the process could have a big impact. This same attention to timing now follows me in designing financial processes.

What behaviour or personality trait is most important to you, and why?

1. The ability to learn. You never know everything about a project before you start, even the skill set required. Asking my colleagues for their advice has taught me most of the skills I use day to day. And where colleagues cannot, Google can help you find the right answers and develop the skills needed to complete a project. Never underestimate the power of good search skills.

2. Equally is integrity. It never ceases to amaze me how relaxed people become when you can tell them you will deal with it and they know you mean it. Integrity shows itself in all aspects of your work - from keeping your word, to the high quality of the work you produce. It also includes owning up to making a mistake and working to resolve it. People can fix a problem if they know about it.

What’s one thing that surprised you about working at QMV?

QMV’s focus and the impact this has on its reputation. As a consultancy QMV defines itself as much by the work it does not take on as by the work it does. Most consultancies I have seen will try to take on any work they can which can be detrimental to their reputation, especially when there is a poor match. Along with that, focus on its people, all of whom are more than happy to help when you have a question. There is a genuine sense of close-knit team at QMV.
